Palm Sunday

Palm Sunday – Passion Sunday. This day, we are reminded that we are all Judas – because one way or another, we have all betrayed our God. We are all Judas. We are fickle beings, welcoming Christ into our lives and our families at one moment, just as he was welcomed into Jerusalem before the Passover. The next moment, we betray him, we put him to death.

But moreover, today we are reminded that despite our betrayals, we are still the children of a God who loves us so much, he died for us anyway. And this is no April Fool’s joke!

Yes, we are all Judas. However, Judas fell into despair at the knowledge of what he had done to his God. We live (we should live) in hope – hope in the resurrection promise of Christ’s passion and death – the hope that is the foundation of our Christian life. The hope that should inform us in all we say and do, and that will lead us to be other than Judas – to be faithful disciples of Christ.

This is one of those days when I am so beyond grateful to be able to take part in the amazing traditions of the Church, so grateful to be Catholic - to have such beautiful, deep reminders at Mass of the deep meaning of Christ's passion and death. The church, dressed in red, the procession with palm branches, the reading of the Passion, the silent recessional that begins our solemn journey into Holy Week that, though engaged in the suffering of Christ, still anticipates Easter joy.

May we all pray this day that we may share deeply in the celebration of Christ’s passion this week, Holy Week. May we go out to meet this most sacred, and most beautiful week of the year in faithful prayer, and with love for our Redeemer.

+Peace, and all good!
